Greek PM Talks AI Infrastructure
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke at a San Francisco event hosted by Endeavor Greece to discuss the nation’s push into digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence, according to TechCrunch. Mitsotakis highlighted that a significant portion of the roughly 36 billion euros Greece received from the European Union post-COVID recovery fund has been directed toward digital upgrades, including an upcoming supercomputer built in partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprise in Lavrio to support scientific research and AI workloads.
Addressing the physical infrastructure buildout required for modern artificial intelligence systems, Mitsotakis noted that Greece is courting large-scale data center investments without facing the intense local opposition seen in other jurisdictions. He pointed to major projects currently underway, including Microsoft constructing a cluster of data centers near Athens and Amazon Web Services striking a deal with the country’s largest utility provider to build a large data center facility in a former coal region.
During the discussion with TechCrunch, the prime minister acknowledged global anxieties surrounding job displacement and societal changes driven by AI chatbots and digital companions, admitting that governments lack comprehensive answers for upcoming technological shifts. He also outlined regional policy adjustments aimed at attracting technical talent and fostering domestic startups, pitching Greece as an alternative hub for founders facing restrictive visa environments in the United States.
