Pixelmon Ends Game Development After Publisher Test Fails
Pixelmon has terminated all game development and laid off its gaming team following a publisher test that failed to secure a long-term commercial offer, according to a report by The Defiant. The project abandoned further work on titles built around its non-fungible token franchise after a roughly three-week test period.
According to the announcement shared in the official Pixelmon Discord, outside publishers used their own marketing budgets and tools to evaluate player acquisition and retention. While the publishers did not reject the games outright, the performance metrics were insufficient to justify an extended publishing deal. Pixelmon noted that it had lingered in a mediocre commercial territory for over two years.
Although publishers suggested additional game polishing followed by another evaluation test, management declined, having previously established the publisher exercise as a final milestone. Pixelmon confirmed that community refunds for token and NFT holders are not possible. Affected employees will receive severance and standard benefits in their jurisdictions, entering garden leave after the games and supporting systems are taken offline.
A smaller team of senior and multidisciplinary staff will remain with the project to explore non-gaming business models utilizing remaining funds. Pixelmon stated that future updates regarding this strategic shift will be provided as the remaining team evaluates alternative paths forward for the brand.
