Accel Eyes $1B Round for Thinking Machines at $40B Valuation
Venture capital firm Accel is in discussions to lead a $1 billion funding round for artificial intelligence lab Thinking Machines at a valuation of at least $40 billion, according to TechCrunch. The startup, founded early last year by former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati, currently maintains an annual revenue run rate exceeding $100 million. If completed, the new financing would value the company below the $50 billion valuation it previously sought late last year.
Thinking Machines previously secured a $2 billion seed financing round led by Andreessen Horowitz alongside Nvidia, GV, Lightspeed, and Conviction Partners, which valued the lab at $12 billion. In July, the company released an open-weight model named Inkling, generating revenue through usage-based compute fees for model adaptation on its Tinker platform. Representatives for Accel and Thinking Machines did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the ongoing funding discussions.
