Pentagon Deploys Custom ChatGPT and Grok
The Pentagon has launched customized versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok, granting three million civilian and military personnel access to generative AI tools tailored to defense operations, TechCrunch reports. ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government are now integrated into GenAI.mil, a centralized and secure Department of Defense portal.
According to the Department of Defense, the platform is designed to provide access to commercial frontier AI models without routing sensitive government data through standard consumer channels. The official military deployments are exempt from standard consumer data collection practices. GenAI.mil has already onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users across the defense department.
ChatGPT Mil, developed through the OpenAI for Government program, supports document heavy administrative tasks, logistics, planning, and policy work. Meanwhile, the Department of Defense stated that Grok for Government, delivered via SpaceX’s Starshield AI network, aims to provide productivity gains and secure collaboration to help execute missions with greater precision across operational contexts ranging from acquisition analysis to supply chain management.
The latest infrastructure expansion follows previous integration of Google Gemini into the secure portal. The current rollout highlights the ongoing buildout of defense AI capabilities through partnerships with commercial tech providers, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI, while navigating compliance frameworks for federal data security.
